Alnwick Castle

Alnwick Castle is a glorious medieval castle, used as a film location for Harry Potter and Black Adder, so instantly recognisable to several generations!

Whilst there are lots of classy things to see and do, if the kids know what to expect then youre heading straight to the Knights Quest feature, where they can dress up, do a quiz, learn medieval craft skills and make your way through a challenge filled mini labyrinth to face a really rather beastly dragon! Its high adventure for sure whatever age you are, so its the perfect place to bring your little knights of either gender!

If you can tear them away there are also extensive areas within the castle to explore such as the luxurious state rooms and vast art collections, plus the Coach House, the Fusiliers Museum and a detailed exhibition on the first world war. The building itself also has a rich history attached to it and theres no end of information available from a multitude of angles if youre doing a school project or have a deeper interest in the site.

The Lost Cellars is a 20 minute performance experience for hardy over 13s showcasing some rather terrible local histories and using modern audio effects and visual holograms to add impact and pizazz! Its pretty strong but not really horrifying, so just please give it sensible consideration if your kids are even borderline sensitive to nightmare material. That said it is free, so if they want to try it and have to leave it costs you nothing but the embarrassment of disturbing others on your way out and the rough night thereafter!
