Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens

Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens, established in 1765, was described by Alan Titchmarsh as one of the finest Gardens I have ever visited. It has been featured on TV regularly, most recently in Gardeners World and the Great British Garden Revival series on Tropical Gardens. But importantly for parents there is also a Childrens Play Area!

The gardens are beautiful and well laid out with a good variety of plants from all over the world and easy to follow routes. The gardens include a Secret Walk, a Summer House to explore and a Sculpture Trail to follow. There are lots of little bridges over the waterways to cross but no steeps slopes and minimal gravel, which is good for anyone, from toddlers to seniors, who may be unsteady on their feet.

Approximately 50% of the Garden is accessible to disabled visitors, but some of the gravel paths are difficult to negotiate.

The point at the top of the gardens give incredible views of Portland Island and Chesil Beach or you can relax by the lily pond, keeping an eye out for carp and dragonflies. A great place for kids to bring a camera along to, a sketch pad or a bug and bird ID book running a near second place if youve got room left in the kit bag next to the picnic and the paddling gear!
